Oh my, it’s chilly out there! At 4:30 the temperature reads 29 degrees here in Lusk. Today’s high is predicted to be around 57, with a breeze out of the South/West. Next week looks considerably warmer that what this one was, yet we all must praise our Lord for the amazing moisture He sent our way!
In Chapter 2 of Proverbs, we are introduced to “her,” Solomons name for the wisdom he introduced us to in Chapter 1. Now he encourages us to get to know “her”, much as one would get to know a loving, considerate teacher who gently trains and prepares her students to prevail in life.
Within the first four verses, the author used eight verbs – take a moment to find and underline them in your Bible right quickly. Please note, finding the wisdom of the Lord requires action upon your part. We microwave Christians seem to think that the Holy Spirit should just instantly zap us with great biblical knowledge and understanding, yet to achieve both requires effort on our part. One commentator writes, “Effort must be expended for one to become wise.”
Studying your Bible is much like opening a bank account – you get out of it what you put into it, hopefully with interest. Our investment to find wisdom involves using many parts of our person: ear, heart, tears, mind and voice. Using all that you are, and all that you have, you are to “search” for the “hidden treasures” within the pages of your Bible and the person of God! You will develop a healthy “fear of the Lord” as you “discover the knowledge of God.” Remember, “knowing God” is the primary purpose of your life!
For today, please note verse 6, “For the Lord gives wisdom; From His mouth come knowledge and understanding.” If you are attempting to understand the present political temperature of America, search the mind of God concerning this topic. For within this chapter of Proverbs, our author makes it abundantly clear that if we sincerely search after God’s wisdom, He will give it to us.
May I suggest that you read your Bible and pray fervently for wisdom, desiring to rightly apply said wisdom, not just gain knowledge. You see my friend, God most often gives His blessings to those who are willing to use those blessings to bless others. Remember the verbs used within the early verses of this chapter, knowing and following your Heavenly Father is far more a verb than a noun.
If you really want to grow in wisdom and to truly love God, you have to invest time and energy. Quite often the best energy investment finds us upon our knees, with a Bible opened before us, with a heart desiring to learn from the Teacher, so that we can speak His grace and mercy into the culture around us!
Investing wisely in the wisdom of God with you, Neal
